Your life at Mount Olivet

Moving into a residential nursing home, even for a short period of recuperation, is a big step for anyone and you and your loved one are bound to have lots of questions about what their new life there will be like . So we've detailed below a few of the most common questions we get asked to help you get a full picture of what they can look forward to.

Where will my home be?

If you like the ambience of stylish traditional buildings combined with living near the sea, Mount Olivet is the home for you.

Originally constructed during the elegant Edwardian era, Mount Olivet's outstanding feature is it's wonderful panoramic views of the sea. There's nothing better than sitting out on the upper decking and just soaking up the mild climate, sea air and stunning views of Torbay. It's great for mind, body and soul!

His health has much improved since moving here

Rod S Son of Resident

Mount Olivet is an amazing place.

My dad has been so happy there and the staff have been wonderful with him. All his needs are met and his health has much improved since moving there.

It is such a relief for our family and it's so good to know he genuinely loves being there and is always in such a good mood when we visit him. This, of course, is due to Mount Olivet's staff and their attitude and genuine enjoyment and engagement with our dad.

The home is wonderfully run and organized and all standards are excellent. Really couldn't wish for a better place for him!

Even if the weather means you can't sit outside you'll still be able to enjoy the views from the light and airy conservatory, which is a great place to sit and read, chat with friends or lose yourself in quiet contemplation.

Inside the home has been completely modernised and tastefully decorated whilst still retaining it's original character. There are two main communal areas. The main lounge, where you can join in the many activities we have or simply relax and catch up on a bit of TV, and the conservatory.

Many of the bedrooms and the dining area also look out across the bay so you're never far from and a truly inspirational view.

Is there a garden?

Garden at Mount Olivet Nursing Home Paignton Torbay

The home has a lovely garden area that is maintained weekly and produces a beautiful array of colours. The garden is easily accessible to all including wheelchair users and features seating areas with large tables with parasols so your loved one will be able to enjoy the lovely fresh air and mild climate that Paignton is blessed with. There's nothing better than relaxing in the sunshine with a nice cup of tea and a cake and chatting with friends or watching the many birds that visit.

The garden is quite private and in the summer we set up a gazebo to provide shelter from the sun (and occasional rain shower!). We regularly hold tea parties, garden parties and other events which your loved one can enjoy. You're more than welcome to come along and enjoy it with them too if you'd like.

Since Dad has been a resident at Mount Olivet a huge weight has lifted from our shoulders

Sam S Daughter of Resident

Since Dad has been a resident at Mount Olivet a huge weight has lifted from our (my brother and I) shoulders.

We know he is safe, loved, so incredibly well looked after and most of all, happy.

I cannot state just how much I appreciate this home and the wonderful staff. I would recommend it to all. Dad's every need is met and the staff go above and beyond to ensure he is safe and well.

What will my room be like?

Bedroom at Mount Olivet Nursing Home

At Mount Olivet rooms are available in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes so you'll be able to choose something that is exactly in line with your tastes and budget. All rooms are spacious with a light and airy feel and many have sweeping views across the bay or sliding patio windows leading directly onto the garden. Whichever they choose, your loved one's room will be tastefully decorated and well equipped with everything they need for daily life.

This is their home so we'd love them to bring their own ornaments, treasured mementos and small furniture items to make their room feel comfortably and familiar. We'll even decorate it in line with their personal taste to truly make it feel like home if they'd like.

To top it all she has a fabulous room that overlooks Torbay

Sharon T Daughter of Resident

What a relief it was to find Mount Olivet.

As my mother's needs became more and more extensive it was clear we needed a home that could provide full nursing care and immediately when I entered Mount Olivet I knew we had found the right one.

My mum is very well cared for and treated with dignity and respect. To top it all she has a fabulous room that overlooks Torbay.

How will I spend my day?

There's never a dull moment at Mount Olivet!

If your loved one likes getting involved there are many activities, visiting entertainers, games, parties and trips for them to enjoy. If they like a little pampering and treats (and who doesn't!) we also have regular visits from the professional hair stylist and all manner of masseurs, aroma therapists and beauticians can be arranged on request for that extra special something.

For those who prefer to exercise the mind we have lots of reading material and there are lots of areas where you can settle down to read a good book or your daily paper.

I only wish I could have come here four years ago after having a stroke.

David B Resident

I am very happy that I have come to reside at Mount Olivet Nursing Home. I can at last start to live my life. The food is good and the carers are excellent, the nurses are superb. The home has a nice atmosphere, no visiting restrictions (which is very important to me) and I only wish I could have come here four years ago after having a stroke. I told someone viewing today the home is "wonderful".

For the more adventurous we have internet access. We recently introduced tablet computers which have proved a big hit with many residents discovering new skills and a whole new world of possibilities online. They even use the tablets to do Skype video calls with families when they can't get in to visit personally. So it'll always be easy for you to keep in touch whenever you want too.

Will I enjoy the food?

Definitely, if you like tasty, home cooked cuisine.

Head chef Russell and his team prepare a variety of delicious and nutritious meals that will have your loved one eagerly anticipating every meal time. Ingredients are sourced locally, freshly prepared daily and served in our spacious airy dining room. This is the hub of the home and everyone looks forward to both the food and the chance to have a natter and a catch up with friends and staff members.

The kitchen staff went out of their way to give food and drink that mum liked

Ruth T Daughter of Resident

We were so relieved to find such a lovely, friendly home for my mother in her last few weeks.

The nursing and care staff treated mum with great care and dignity and did everything they could to meet her needs. She had a comfortable room overlooking an attractive garden. The room was always kept clean and clothes were beautifully laundered.

The kitchen staff went out of their way to give food and drink that mum liked and made sure that family members had meals when required. All the staff were kind to my mother and our family. It was a great comfort to us knowing that our mother was so well looked after at the end of her life.

If your loved one has special dietary requirements we'll make sure they're accommodated and there are always alternatives if ever they don't like something that's on the day's menu. Similarly, although Russell takes great care to ensure everything is fresh, your loved one can have whatever they want (so don't worry about that special hankering for Angel Delight or Heinz Cream of Tomato, it's no problem!).

You can also rest assured that all the food is prepared in the safest, most hygienic environment since Mount Olivet continues to maintain its long held 5 Star food hygiene rating.

Who will be looking after me?

What we believe to be the best team in the business.

Unlike many care homes in the area our staff turnover is very low. Our team is strong and stable with the majority of staff members being at Mount Olivet for many years. We believe this has been a significant contributing factor in Mount Olivet and it's sister home, Kingsmount , being awarded one of the Top 20 Best Small Care Home Groups in the UK in 2017. Since there are over 21,000 care homes in the UK that's not bad!

What it means for you and your loved one is that they will be looked after by a highly skilled, highly trained, expert team who have vast experience of caring for the needs of those in their later years. More importantly perhaps is that they'll become trusted friends and companions that your loved one will be comfortable with when dealing with the more sensitive aspects of personal care.

Help and support from initial contact and all of mum's stay could not be bettered.

Carol B Daughter of Resident

I really would not fault Mount Olivet, neither would mum. Within a couple of days, she regarded it as home and was completely relaxed and happy. She said staff could not have been better or more helpful.

I was always made to feel welcome it certainly felt like home. The help and support from initial contact and all of mum's stay could not be bettered. Thank you all so much for making a difficult time easier.

Families are frequently amazed by the positive transformation in their loved one when they come to Mount Olivet, both physically and mentally. Several residents have come from other places with persistent beds sores that our staff have been able to heal and that have not re-occurred.

In fact the most common comment we get when someone has moved in and experienced at first hand the great life they now enjoy here  is 'I wish I'd done it much sooner!' But don't just take our word for it. We have an open door policy and you're more than welcome to chat with existing residents and their families for a first hand account of the exceptionally high quality care your loved one will experience at Mount Olivet.
